Generally, we measure the floor area to determine the number of tiles required for a specific room. This helps estimate closer to the actual number of tiles needed for that particular floor.

So if you want to know how to calculate the tiles needed for a floor, this article is for you.

Here, we've explained with an example to demonstrate the number of tiles required for a floor.

***Formulas and mathematical equations are included in this article.

Calculating Tiles Needed for a Floor Using the DBL Tiles Calculator

Here are a few simple steps you can follow to calculate how many tiles you will need to cover your floor:

Step 1: Measure the length.

If the project is for a floor, measure one side. If it's for a wall, then measure the height of the wall.

Step 2: Measure the width

If the project is for a floor, measure the other side. If it's for a wall, then measure its breadth.

Step 3: Multiply the two measurements

Multiplying the length and width will provide you with the square footage of the project space.

Area of the floor=Floor Length x Floor Width

Area of a single tile= (Tile length + Grout size) x (Tile width + Grout size)

Step 4: Calculate the number of tiles

You can only purchase tile in boxes. To calculate the number of tiles, you have to divide the floor area by the area of each tile.

Number of tiles = Area of the floor / Area of tile

Example:

Below is an example of how to calculate the number of floor tiles using the DBL tiles calculator:

Let's assume:

  • Room Length: 15ft
  • Room width: 10ft
  • Grout size: 1mm (0.003ft approx.)

For 60cm x 60cm or (2ft x 2ft approx.) tiles:

  • Tile area: (60cm+0.1) x (60cm+0.1) = 3612 cm2

or

 1.9717 ft x 1.9717 ft = 3.87sq ft

  • Total room area: 15ft x 10ft = 150sq ft
  • Number of tiles required: 150sq ft / 3.87sq ft = 38.56 or 39 tiles
  • Number of boxes required: 10 (each box contains 4 tiles)

For 60cm x 120cm or (2ft x 4ft approx.) tiles:

  • Tile area: (60+0.1) x (120+0.1) = 7218cm2

or

1.9717ft + 3.9402ft= 7.77sq ft

  • Total room area: 15ft x 10ft = 150sq ft
  • Number of tiles required: 150ft/ 7.77ft = 19.31 or 20 tiles
  • Number of boxes required: 10 (each box contains 2 tiles)

Other Factors to Consider Before Tiling Your Floor

Here are some other factors to be kept in mind while calculating the tile.

Layout Pattern

How the tiles are laid out on the floor determines the number of tiles you might require and the arrangement in the patterns of the tiles. No matter which pattern you maintain, it's a good idea to ensure your patterns are consistent.

Gap

How much empty space you leave between tiles is an important consideration. This determines your layout durability and, to some extent, has aesthetic value.

Type of Tile

The type of tiles, material, category, and design patterns significantly affect the finished interior of a room. Hence, it's important to consider which type of tile you will use for each space.
