You might be familiar with porcelain tiles. Ceramic tiles that have undergone a higher temperature firing are known as porcelain tiles. The tiles become uniform, dense, and impenetrable due to the higher temperatures' extreme hardening of the tiles.

Various porcelain tiles are produced to fit different applications and designs, depending on slight differences in production techniques. Here in this article, we'll familiarize you with the types of porcelain tiles according to their properties and necessary details.

Three Most Popular Types of Porcelain Tiles

Generally, as per design and texture, porcelain tiles can be of three different body types:

  • Glazed Porcelain Tiles
  • Technical Porcelain Tiles
  • Premium Glazed Porcelain Tiles

Let's see how these are different from each other.

Glazed porcelain tiles

Glazed porcelain tiles go through a second fire process where a layer of liquid glass is applied to protect them. The tiles are slightly slippery due to this protective covering, but it also enables inkjet printing of many patterns and hues.

Porcelain tiles with glaze look best indoors and significantly improve the aesthetics of your house. They work well in bathrooms, kitchens, and even spotless laundry rooms.

Besides, these tiles are available in many colors. The glazing process enables you to create almost any look you choose. You just need to try using your imagination.

Technical porcelain tiles

Technical porcelain tiles are made by injecting dry, colored clay powder into a mold, pressing it down, and then firing it. Each porcelain tile produced using this method has a distinctive pattern.

As a result, technical porcelain tiles usually need less care. This tile is perfect for household and commercial use because it is incredibly durable. Usually, sealing is not necessary.

Premium Glazed porcelain tiles

Premium Glazed porcelain tile bodies have their surface colors evenly resembling the tile body's density, which comprises materials with complementary hues. Finely mottled color combinations or color compounds are used in the tile-making mixture. It ensures that the tile's body matches the color of the surface.

Premium Glazed porcelain tiles offer both aesthetic and toughness. The additional work applied throughout the production line to match the tile's surface will ensure surface longevity. Also, the color of the body underneath the glaze is almost the same. You can use these tiles in zones with moderate to high pedestrian movement.

How to Install Porcelain Tiles?

Professional installation of porcelain tiles is necessary to guarantee a high-quality outcome. Follow the below steps to do this:

  • Prepare the base floor
  • Apply cement and sand solution on the floor and spread them (see tiles guide to know the ratio)
  • Level the floor's surface to prevent cracked tiles
  • Trim the tiles to match the walls' margins (if necessary)
  • Put grouts using a grout spreader between the tiles
  • Wipe out extra grouts using damp cloths
  • Let the floor dry for the next 24 hours.

How to Take Care of Porcelain Tiles?

Maintaining porcelain tiles is very easy and simple, just like ceramic tiles. The thickness makes these tiles less likely to be discolored or cracked. Even if a tile is accidentally cracked, no unattractive red grain will show through as the color is carried across the width of full-body porcelain tiles.

However, it would help if you vacuumed or cleaned your porcelain tiles at least once a week.

How to Clean Porcelain Tiles?

Using a mop and warm water is the most effective approach. Mild soap should also be used sometimes.

However, we discourage using chemicals for cleaning. Chemicals or products like bleaching or acidic cleaning solutions can damage the seal. Also, steam cleansing is not recommended.

Ceramic vs. Porcelain Tile: What is the Difference?

Regardless of the same tile family members, porcelain and ceramic tiles differ significantly.

The porosity is the main distinction between the two. Compared to ceramic tile, porcelain tile is non-porous and has a low water absorption rate.

Porcelain tile is much denser and more durable due to its low porosity. Furthermore, unlike ceramic tile, porcelain tile is suitable for both wet and dry conditions, on floors and walls, and in domestic and commercial settings.

Where Can You Use Porcelain Tiles?

The sleek surface of porcelain tile makes it the best material for deflecting moisture. In addition, porcelain's non-absorbent and waterproof properties make it perfect for restrooms and lobbies where other flooring varieties can become damaged by condensation from heat, water, rain, mud, and melted snow.

Besides, Porcelain tile is a great option for the kitchen since it is simple to clean and disinfect, making it easy to rinse and wipe down. You just need to select the right quality and right design.

Final Words

Whether tiling a large or tiny space, many porcelain tiles styles and colors are available to complement your project. Thanks to the wide variety of tiles available. You can design any style you like, whether conventional, modern, simple or more natural-looking. Additionally, porcelain tiles are available with various treatments, such as glossy, glazing, matte, and rocky finish.

On top of that, porcelain tiles are a classy and long-lasting solution for tiling that will let you take full advantage of your living area. Hopefully, this blog will help you if you are choosing porcelain tiles for your next project.
